Contrary to common belief, your weight is not really the indicator of a weight problem – the actual percentage of body fat is the true indicator. You need to know what percentage that is actually FAT. How can you control your weight loss if you do not know what percentage of your body is fat, before you start your program?

Let me give an example on measuring body fat, this is important in understanding weight loss, or should I say fat loss. This is really what they are trying to lose, right? FAT!

Say a person weighs 200 pounds and when measuring body fat is around body fat is 40%

This means that 40% of the members of the body is made of fat (80 lbs). The other 120 pounds in muscle, bone, organs, water, etc. (everything but fat).

Now, any weight loss program should include some real kind of strength training tailored to their personal abilities (Another reason we need someone who really understands the whole body and how it works). Because if you can earn some of that muscle mass is lost with age, our body will burn more calories and therefore burn more fat!

It is now a couple of weeks into the program and this person steps on the scale and now weighs 198 pounds. They’re a little disappointed because I thought they were doing better. Your clothes fit better, have more energy and feel better.

But they’re still depressed, and only lost a lousy 2 pounds! No? Are we sure?

We now check your body fat and is now 36% not 40%. Let’s do a little math.

200 pounds of body fat of 40% means that 40% of them is fat, which equals 80 pounds of fat and 120 pounds are the muscles and everything else (called the lean body mass).

198 pounds at 36% body fat means that 36% of them is fat equivalent to 71 pounds of fat and 125 pounds of lean body mass.

This person actually lost 9 kilos of fat (the things we are trying to lose) and gained 5 pounds of lean body mass (especially muscle mass, which is a good thing because this will allow your body to burn more calories!)

It is necessary to measure and focus on percentage of body fat, not weight!

But do not worry, when body fat decrease as body fat decreases so that the numbers on the scale!
